Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
Arguably at the top of the list of scariest rides at Disney World is Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. If the idea of speeding through the dark at 60 mph while listening to Aerosmith doesn’t make your heart race, the three inversions and sudden twists will. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is one of Disney’s fastest rides, launching from 0 to 57 mph in just 2.8 seconds. You won’t see any of the flips and corkscrews coming—because it’s close to pitch-black inside! It’s a wild, high-speed adventure that combines music and thrills in one heart-pounding package.
I never forget a ride on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. The anticipation as you wait for the launch is electrifying. As soon as the countdown hits zero, you’re catapulted into darkness, and the adrenaline rush is indescribable. It’s a ride that leaves you breathless and wanting more, a perfect ride for any thrill-seeker.
Expert Tip: If you’re thinking of riding this ride, you’ll want to make sure you secure your belongings since it flips you upside-down. Check out this backpack that’s perfect for theme park days—it keeps your items safe without being too bulky.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Imagine stepping into an abandoned hotel, hearing eerie whispers, and then plunging 13 stories in a haunted elevator. Welcome to The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. This iconic ride is all about the build-up—slow, creepy moments before an adrenaline-pumping drop. And the best (or worst, depending on how you feel about free-falling) part? You never know how many times you’ll drop or how long you’ll be suspended in mid-air. It’s random every time!
Though it’s one of the scariest rides at Disney World, it’s also one of the best-themed. With one of the best-themed experiences and queues anywhere, everyone will appreciate the spooky theming, including teens and those who can appreciate a bit of retro-spooky vibes. Be sure to read about some of the other best rides at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
Expert Tip: Waiting in line for Tower of Terror can take a while, especially during busy seasons. If you’re going to be waiting in line or evening using Lightning Lane passes to shorten your wait, I always recommend bringing a portable phone charger to keep your phone charged all day long.
Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
What’s scarier than a runaway train speeding through the Himalayas? Expedition Everest amps up the fear with its infamous Yeti lurking in the shadows. This coaster not only races up and down a mountain but also throws in some wild twists—like an 80-foot drop out of the mountain and a segment where the track goes backward in the dark! As a roller coaster lover, this ride hits all the right notes. You’ve got suspense, speed, and one of the best views in the park (if you can open your eyes long enough to see it).
My favorite ride at any Disney park anywhere, I’m always blown away by the attention to detail and the intensity of the ride. It’s a ride that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Not only is it one of the scariest rides at Disney World, it’s also one of the best rides at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Expert Tip: While the line for Expedition Everest tends to move pretty quickly, there is a single-rider line you can take advantage of if you don’t mind riding with a stranger or picking your seat. It’s a great option for those who are traveling to Disney World alone on a solo trip as well!
Space Mountain
Space Mountain is a classic indoor roller coaster that takes you on a journey through outer space. With its dark setting and sharp turns, it’s a ride that’s both thrilling and disorienting, making it one of the scariest rides at Disney World. Plus, the retro-futuristic vibe is pure Disney magic. It’s a must-do anytime you’re visiting Magic Kingdom.
Space Mountain has always been one of my favorite rides. The darkness adds an element of mystery, and the sharp turns keep you guessing. It’s a ride that never gets old, no matter how many times you experience it. It’s such a successful ride that other parks (including Disney parks) have tried to replicate its success as an indoor roller coaster.
Expert Tip: Hopping in line for Space Mountain during the fireworks or a parade can help limit the amount of time you’re standing in line for this iconic Magic Kingdom attraction.
