Disney seems to change it’s “skip the line” systems at a breakneck speed. Staying up to date with the latest updates can be a challenge. This current iteration is known as “Lightning Lane”.
I’ve visited Disney World both with and without their skip-the-line features. I also have over 25 years of experience visiting, researching, and working in theme parks, so I know how all of these options can stack up.
In this post, I want to help you understand what Disney World Lightning Lane is, the different options available to you, and strategies for how to help it maximize the fun you have on your vacation.

What Is Lightning Lane?
Disney has had ways to shorten wait times for decades. Previous systems were called FastPass, FastPass+, and Genie+. This current iteration is known as “Lightning Lane”, and has been in place since 2024.
Simply put, Lightning Lane allows you to shorten the wait times you would experience in the regular standby line, which is the line anyone can walk up to and enter for an attraction. Access to Lightning Lane requires a purchase, while entering a standby line is free.
While Lightning Lane exists at the Disneyland Resort, it’s more impactful at Walt Disney World, as that resort consists of four theme parks spread out over a wider distance. This post is going to discuss Walt Disney World’s Lightning Lane products.
Types of Lightning Lane Passes
There are three different options to purchase for Lightning Lane:
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows you to most attractions participating in the service once per day by reserving a time to come back to an attraction. It does not, however, grant you access to Lightning Lanes for rides participating the Lightning Lane Single Pass program (more on that below). You’re able to park hop with a Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
- Lightning Lane Single Pass can be purchased for the most in-demand rides at each park. Usually, there’s only one or two of these at each park, and they aren’t included when you purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass. You can, however, still reserve these ahead of time as you can with other Lightning Lane products. You need to reserve a time to come back to an attraction with Lightning Lane Single Pass.
- Lightning Lane Premier Pass allows you to enter the Lightning Lane queues for all attractions participating in Lightning Lane once per day at one park per day. You are not able to park hop with this option, but you do not have to worry about reserving times for your rides – you can just show up to the Lightning Lane queue and walk on.

How Does Lightning Lane Work at Disney World?
You reserve the time for your Lightning Lane experience from the My Disney Experience app on your phone, so make sure it’s charged up and ready to use throughout the day.
If you’re a guest staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel and want to purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Lightning Lane Single Pass, you’re able to reserve your first three Lightning Lanes at 7AM 7 days before your check-in date at the hotel. You’re also able to reserve three rides for each day of your entire vacation!
For example, if you have a trip planned that consists of 5 park days beginning on March 8 when you check in to Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, you’d be able to start making reservations beginning on March 1 at 7 AM, and you’d be able to pick three rides for each day of your 5-day trip.
All rides are broken into two tiers. You’re able to select one ride from Tier 1 and two rides from Tier 2 when you reserve a head of time. This is to prevent everyone from always choosing the same rides, like some of the more intense rides at the resort.
You can even select to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass and park hop if your tickets come with that feature.
Guests who are not staying on-property are able to reserve their first Lightning Lanes three days before their first park day or within three days if you’re an Annual Passholder. The tiers and other limits still apply.
Once you’re in the park and have redeemed a Lightning Lane, you can then purchase another one. Try to have three Lightning Lanes reserved at all times per person.
By purchasing a Lightning Lane product, you should (in theory) be shortening your wait times for attractions by entering a separate line from a separate entrance. Note that this does not guarantee that there will be no wait for the attraction. Rather, it just shortens the amount of time you’re waiting, often by a considerable amount.
How Much Does Lightning Lane Cost at Disney World?

The cost for Lightning Lane varies depending on the day and season, the product you’re purchasing, and what park(s) you’re visiting. To view the most up-to-date pricing, check the My Disney Experience app.
Most Lightning Lane Multi Pass products will range between $15-$40 per person per day.
Most Lightning Lane Single Pass products will range between $15-$30 per person per day.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass can cost as much as about $450.

Does Lightning Lane Sell Out at Disney World?
Yes, some rides will sell out of Lightning Lanes each day, and some of them can sell out mere seconds or minute after their availability at 7 AM!
To ensure you have all your Lightning Lanes booked, here are some expert tips:
- Know which rides you and your group want to do the most ahead of time. Prioritize the most important ones and plan on reserving those at 7 AM on your first day of availability.
- The day before you’re able to book Lightning Lanes, make sure every one in your party has their tickets and reservations linked together in the My Disney Experience app. That way, when you purchase Lighting Lane products, no one will be left out of the group.
- At 6:58 AM on the day you’re able to make your first reservations, go as far as you can when purchasing Lightning Lane products and keep refreshing until the system allows you to book. That way, you’re guaranteed to be one of the first in line to purchase the products.
- Purchase your Lightning Lane Single Pass rides first followed by your Lightning Lane Multi Pass rides. If you’re curious about which rides I recommend using Lightning Lane for, read my top picks!
- Once you’re in the parks, you can reserve your next Lightning Lane time when you scan in at the attraction. Check what’s available and make your next reservation.
- Refreshing the board in the app can reveal more times and availability, so if you don’t see a time you want, keep refreshing the page for a bit to see if it pops up!
- You can modify your reservation time once you’ve made it, so it’s probably better to snag a time and then try to refresh it, then wait for the perfect time to pop up before booking it.
Disney PhotoPass Perks with Lightning Lane
Aside from being able to shorten your wait times, you’re able to download all your on-ride photos for free from the My Disney Experience app if you purchase Lightning Lane. You also get access to Disney PhotoPass Lenses to use in the parks.
Is Disney World Lightning Lane Worth It?

If you’re someone who doesn’t visit Disney World that often, it could be beneficial for you to purchase Lightning Lane to maximize your experiences while minimizing your wait times. Additionally, if you or any one in your family hates long lines, including small children, it may be worth the purchase just for the piece of mind.
I personally try to get Lightning Lane Multi Pass for Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios when I visit, as those parks have a lot of very popular rides that tend to get long lines.
If you’re going to be visiting EPCOT or Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you may not feel like you need a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, so purchasing the Lightning Lane Single Pass for those parks may be worth it. For example, the line at Expedition Everest moves pretty quickly, while the line for Avatar Flight of Passage does not.
Additionally, if you’re someone who visits the park frequently, like an Orlando-local or Annual Passholder, you may not feel that you need to purchase a Lightning Lane product for every trip, and may want to just splurge on special occasions.
Overall, what’s going to be best for you is going to vary from person to person. Make sure to work with your Authorized Disney Vacation Planner to determine if Disney World Lightning Lane is best for you.
